Welcome 2014

Boy where did that year go. It just seemed like yesterday that we were welcoming in 2013. I cannot believe a year has come and gone. Sometimes i wish that I go go back and tweak a thing or two that would have done differently.

As for reading, this year I will be doing something different. I am not going to set a book limit that I would like to read this year. Everyone on GoodReads sets the amount of book they plan on reading in 2014. I am going do more challeneges this year and read-alongs. So by doing this I am hoping to put less stress on the reading part of my life. Because lets face it reeading is fun and should be relaxing.

No more by the number for this guy. More quality

Happy Sci-Fi Month

I was looking through my blog feed and saw something interesting in Little Redhead blog. November is Sci-fi month! I'm a huge fan of science fiction, and it makes me sad :(  that a lot of people don't even give the genre a try because they're put off by the stereotypes. I promise you it's not all  aliens and UFOs, and that there are some really interesting and amazing worlds and ideas worth exploring.
This month, I'll be posting more than usual sci-fi related things. Thanks to Rinn at Rinn Reads for setting this all up!

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m in my 30s,I live in rural Cheeseland. I have a wife that tolerates me totally geekyiness(I am thankful for that) and I have a 3 year old daughter in which I corrupt daily. I work as a cheeseminer and love reading escaping reality. I like watching sci-fi/fantasy and playing video games.

2. How long have you been a fan of sci-fi?
Ahh...I have been a fan since watching the Star Wars original series on VHS..over and over and over again. I can still recite the original trilogy by heart. For about 25 years or so.

3. Why do you like sci-fi, and what is your favourite thing about it?
What is there not to like about this massive and rich genre. Reading the wonderful world that sci-fi has to offer as well. You can never get enough of it. There is something for everyone, but sometimes you might have to look a little harder for some individuals.

4. Favourite books/games/films/TV shows in the genre?
Some of my favorite authors are Philp K. Dick, HG Wells, Suzanne Collins, Ernest Cline, JK Rowlin,Terry Prachett, CS Lewis....this list could go on and on.  I’m a HUGE fan of Dr. Who, ORGINAL Star Wars trilogy, Star Trek, Short Circuit, ET and LOTR trilogy.

5. What are your plans for Sci-Fi Month?

For the most part I will be reviewing a number of scifi books. I will be taking part in some of the discussions that will be taking place this month.

Discussion: Hi-Tech Issues

My wife and I were talking this morning about authors signing books. Then the subject, lead to the way that the book market has been a more hi-tech way in reading books, ie Kindle or Nook to name a few.

Then that go use wondering IF one day that all print form of book were to go way that CDs....I HOPE NOT!! What does an author going to do sign your e-book reader. Are they going to have to autograph your cover or with there be a page on the kindle screen that they(author) will be able to sign their Herbie Hancock. Hmm...it puzzles me as well.I do have an e-reader...I really do like my Kindle a lot. I still love the feeling of having the physical feeling in the hands.

Just my thoughts for the day. What are your thoughts of this discussion?

Lack of Reading

It looks like I am  not going to reach my goal of 25 books this year..:(( I have disappointed myself. I am not that sure why i was able to get to my goal. I think I know with the hectic life and working 12 hour days at times at the cheese mine. I think I am going to get audible. Has any of you looked into the service or have it?

How do some parents find the time read with kids? I try to read in bed, but I found out cluckers are not a good idea. Due to the fact, when I dose off I get a 5 lb book in the face. lol

Magic Kingdom for Sale—Sold! by Terry Brooks

Cover of "Magic Kingdom for Sale--Sold! (...
Title: Magic Kingdom for Sale—Sold!
Author: Terry Brooks
Narrator: Dick Hill
Series:Magic Kingdom of Landover Book #1
Format: Audiobook
Genre: Fantasy
Year:1986
Acquired:Library
Ranking: Back it Up

Summary:
Book One in the Magic Kingdom of Landover Series Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention. The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize the king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything. Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor. To put a final touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, terrible lord of the demons, had challenged all prospective Kings of Landover to a duel to the death - a duel which no human could hope to win. The task of proving his right to be King seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn...

My Thoughts:
I was not that sure what to expect from this book. I would never put a light comedy and Terry Brooks together, especially with his epic Swords of Shannara series. It was a pleasant surprise that I stepped into with the  Magic Kingdom for Sale—Sold. It has a great balance of comic relief and adventure in this book.

The cast in this book, I have not quite read before well...Terry Prachett, but that is a different ball game. This is a perfect first read for my challenges(Once Upon A Time and A Humor in It All). This book anyone can read from a fantasy genre addict or somebody that just wants to wade into a fantasy world.

I will be continuing this series in NEAR future. I sure am glad for Good Reads recommendations..;)

If you have read this book, what were your thoughts this book?

Graphic Novel

It just seems these days with Aqua Girl and other responsibilities in daily life I just cannot do the amount of reading to fulfill this blog. So instead of reading just books(I will still throw in here every so often), I will be also reviewing more manga and graphic novels to have more posts for you read. I will be able to read these much quicker, especially with a 18 month old. I will also be blogging happening in my(other) life as well.
